The regiment dates from 25th March 1705, at the Kings Head Hotel in Lichfield, then in 1751 became the 38th foot regiment. In 1756 the 64th was raised, the 80th followed in 1793 when England was at war with France. The 98th was raised in 1824 when it was realised the army was to small for increased commitments of the Empire. In 1881 the 38th / 80th became The South Staffords and the 64th / 98th became The North Staffords.
In 1959 the regiments amalgamated to become the present day Staffordshire Regiment also being known by the shortened title of The Staffords.
Some special regimental dates:
Ypres Day 31st July, Ferozeshan Day 21st December, Anzio Day 22nd January, Arnhem Day 17th September.
The regimental mascot of the Staffordshire Regiment is a black Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Watchman and this years festival Logo. Watchman is also eligible for promotion.
The regiment is proud to state that 13 members were awarded the Victoria Cross Medal, with two being awarded in one battle being The Battle of Arnhem in world war two.
We hope this goes to show why we chosen a "Staffie" as our logo for this years festival, so a big thank you to The Staffordshire Regiment for everything they have done for our county and our country. |
